Eighteen teams of four competed in this year’s ECSC Golf Day.
Before teeing off, the players enjoyed a coffee and bacon roll in the EG&C Clubhouse. Then it was off to the ‘shotgun start’, with each team starting at the same time on each of the eighteen holes. The weather was blustery, with the occasional shower, but otherwise kind.
After the golf, players shared a drink or two with friends and then sat down to an excellent two course dinner. We were pleased to have Exeter Chiefs star, Tommy Wyatt, join us to present the prizes, and do a short Q and A.
The winning team this year was "Athletic Athletic" (Phil Friend, Graeme May, Gary Litton & Jim Wright). In second place was Neil Goodfellow and "Ecrosse" and in third place was "East Stand Band" (Richard Cleave, Philip Watts, Paul Waite & Ian Stronnoch).
As well as providing a good day’s golf for many of our Supporters, the Day also raises money which the Supporters’ Club uses to support youth and development rugby throughout the South West. We are very grateful to our Main Sponsor DCW Polymers and all the Hole sponsors for their generosity. We are also grateful to all those who donated team prizes, raffle prizes and items for auction (see below for details of all those who donated). A total of nearly £3000 was raised.
As examples of how ECSC uses the money raised, we have just given a grant to Devon Deaf Rugby, the first County deaf side in the Country, looking to provide a team and fixtures for the Deaf community to play together in a safe, enjoyable and welcoming environment. We have also joined with Exeter College in setting up a ‘hardship fund’ for young players who due to personal circumstances could not afford to fully join in with development activities planned for their team.
